Happy New Year

Traveling is learning_ Keynan Proverb

The Servant Leadership class took us on a journey last year from a simple idea to a significant investment of learning for a lifetime. We did not learn about servant leadership only, but we have adopted it and incorporated it into our lives. Instead of ending the community engagement project, we decided to continue it and develop it further. Here are a few updates on what we have been up to so far:

Our team lead, Jennipher, took the plastic road project on another level of research as part of her final year capstone project for her BSc. Mechanical Engineering degree. Jennipher is mainly focusing on acquiring the quantitative and qualitative data needed for the project to be a success. Moreover, she is also figuring out a way to maximize the road strength by incorporating plastic waste pebbles in the road aggregates for the road surface layer before the melted bitumen-plastic mixture is applied. It promises to be a worthwhile endeavour; we cannot wait to see the results by the end of March this year.

Concerning funding and training, we managed to secure a place in the incubation programme conducted by the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre(GCIC). GCIC is a pioneering business incubator with a unique focus on developing SME ventures and entrepreneurs in Ghana’s ‘Green Economy’. Their mission is to create and support an exceptional set of transformational ventures and entrepreneurs who are pioneering adaptive and mitigating solutions for climate change issues in Ghana. We are excited to be one of the few student entrepreneurs to have been selected for such a program. We will be starting the incubation program on the 30th of January this month.

Beside GCIC, we have also been establishing connections with other people and institutions who can help our project to progress. We believe that by creating enough rapport and resources, we will be able to reduce the impact of plastic waste in Ghana drastically. Moreover, we will build strong and durable roads that will last a lifetime!

Happy 2019!

This update brings such joy to my heart! I’m glad the project continued. It is a worthy project if only because potholes and plastic waste are two things Ghana has plenty, plenty of and your solution holds such possibilities.
